Lara Downs' self-replacing fine wool merino flock has been developed over the past 15 years on two properties of around 500mm rainfall at Balliang & Telangatuk East in Victoria.

The flock is predominantly based on East Loddon blood ewes with mainly Roseville Park (NSW) rams used plus some infusion of the Banavie (VIC) bloodline. Wool from the flock is sold under the "Lara Downs" brand.

Our breeding objectives are to produce heavy cutting, easy to manage sheep that consistently grow an "elite" style of wool of between 17.5 and 19.5 micron.
The wool must be of high quality - bright & lustrous, soft & free flowing, and deeply and evenly crimped from base to tip.

Merino wool just shorn off the Ewes, January 2012. Long & lovely. Bright and beautiful ! It has been tested at 19.5 microns which is consistent with our long term average. It can be supplied in bulk to spinners etc. No chemical application have been used on this wool, so use in complete confidence. Please enquire about pricing.

Wool quality and value has improved steadily , since the infusion of superior genetics.

In 2002/3 the weaner fleece wool averaged 16.8 micron and achieved a price of $13.70/kg (greasy). The ewe flock cut an average of 5.34 kg (plus a lamb) and returned over $40 per head (wool only).
